The Nossiter Net is cast  to snare some of  the riper rascalities of the day.  Comments?  editor@nossiter.net
As a sample of Mondovino's critics, this one, from the Robert Parker web site bulletin board, erobertparker.com, diplays greater than normal confusion.  The Mr. Nossiter referred to is brother Jonathan, the maker of the film!  My reply was suppressed shortly after I posted it, so I reproduce it here in the interests of free speech and unfettered exchange.

From Greg, “Executive Oenophile” at erobertparker.com*:

I would just like to know if Mr. Nossiter has actually seen the movie before posting such long and opinionated comments.

Incidentally, am I the only one who thinks that what Frescobaldis, Antinoris, etc., did during WWII is quite irrelevant today. I guess that is a "new world" philosophy, but regardless of what my grandfather or other ancestors have done or not done, I accept neither blame nor responsibility and feel no guilt or pride. I wasn't there and their actions were not my actions.

Likewise, some of the other observations and information in the post. Who cares what Mr. Nossiter's brother studied or what he does? A good editor, Mr. Nossiter, can be a god-send.

Finally, the observation
quote:

Where Mondovino takes its stand is against global homogenization. Call it cultural central planning, on the Soviet economic model, in which the preferences of a dominant economic power group are imposed everywhere, to the detriment of localism, variety, diversity

is illogical on its face. One might expect a supposed MBA to know that it is a stretch to call "preferences" imposed simply because they actually are in fact "preferences" as demonstrated by purchasers in the market. This is quite different from having something truly "imposed" by central decree with the threat of the gulag for back up. Please!

Anyway, welcome.

Cheers!

Josh Nossiter’s quickly censored reply:

From a "supposed MBA" (Columbia, '83) to a presumed sentient being (presumption based on apparent ability to operate a computer keyboard), greetings. Your evident confusion arises from an incomprehension of the word "preferences", which means quite simply that which is best liked, chosen among several alternatives, or simply preferred. Don't believe that preferences can be imposed? The Bush administration prefers new weapons systems to spending on veterans' programs. The Pentagon budget gets a huge increase; the VA medical budget doesn't keep pace with inflation. This has nothing to do with the market. It's the imposition of the administration's preferences on a regrettably somnolent, and seemingly uncomprehending, citizenry. So look on the bright side: you have lots of company.
