The Booboisie Lives

The Nossiter Net is cast  to snare some of  the riper rascalities of the day.  Comments?  Send a letter to the editor.
Bailout bankrupt homeowners victimized by predatory lenders allowed to run amok by free-market extremists? Or homeowners facing foreclosure due to the no jobs, no growth, high cost Bush economy? Absolutely not. That’s rewarding financially irresponsible layabouts bereft of the Christian work ethic and moral values.

Bailout giant investment bank Bear Stearns when it bankrupts itself by engaging in insanely risky, utterly irresponsible financial transactions on a massive scale, thereby impoverishing thousands of small investors and ordinary employees? Absolutely. That’s prudent monetary policy.  A market panic, after all,  would be very bad for big investors. Anyway the bank’s officers have already been paid their tens of millions of dollars in salary and bonuses, so the people who matter won’t suffer unduly.

Use your pulpit to preach criticism of the U.S., highlighting racism, violence, social injustice, and the cost in blood and treasure of a wanna be imperial foreign policy? That’s unpatriotic, afro-supremacist, and treasonable.

Use your pulpit to preach criticism of the U.S., highlighting the threat to civilization posed by homosexuals, non-Christians, immigrants, non-whites, evolutionary biologists, and the poor? That’s family values evangelism.

Show your patriotism by expressing the wish to remove from harm’s way tens of thousands of U.S. military personnel, returning them home from a conflict which their very presence is helping to prolong? Further wave the flag by demanding adequate health, education, pension, and housing benefits for the returnees? Only if you’re a weak on national security limp wristed milquetoast.

Show your patriotism by blindly supporting a senseless war costing trillions of dollars and responsible for hundreds of thousands of casualties and millions of refugees? Which acts as a recruiting and fund raising campaign for the very people we’re supposed to be fighting? Yup. That’s why they wear those little flags in their lapels.

And this is reality, not some vile nightmare hatched in the chill of  a cheerless gray dawn before the alarm clock rings. It’s the reality of Dick “Iraq is going great and was well worth the effort” Cheney and George “I’m an optimist kind of guy” Bush. Also of their supporters in the electorate, happily diminishing in number all the time. And of the commentariat;  just count how many employees of the American Enterprise Institute were featured on the Op Ed page of the Sunday New York Times.

H.L. Mencken would not be surprised. The booboisie is alive and well.

                                                 * * * * *

There was nothing new at The Nossiter Net between March 3rd and April 26th, 2007, nearly eight weeks.  The reason:  tech sabotage. Yahoo Geocities, the host for this site, denied access for the entire period.  At one point, they even managed to lose all the files.  In many discussions with Yahoo staff, no clear explanation was forthcoming.  No one seemed able to fix the problem.  Ruling out the possibility of Dubbya’s revenge, I finally wrote to Mr. Terry Semel, Chairman and CEO of Yahoo! Inc and described the ordeal the page had undergone since the beginning of March.  A week later, a helpful Yahooo engineer named Jason called.  He had my letter before him.  Though he couldn’t do the repairs on on the spot, he promised a fix by the next day.  That was April 26th, nearly two months after shutting me down in the first place.

The Nossiter Net apologizes, which is more than I can say for Yahoo Geocities.
