|The Bureau of Land Management has decided to freeze all solar energy projects on government land pending environmental impact studies. That means no more big solar initiatives for two years or so. With oil at $140 a barrel, the decision might seem counterintuitive. There is after all enough sunshine in the 1.6 million acres of the Mojave National Preserve to power the entire nation. Furthermore, at the same time the government is worried about the environmental impact of solar panels in national parks, Mr. Bush is demanding that we drill for oil in national parks. But there is no paradox here and critics of the B.L.M. are unjust and wrong-headed. As usual, the administration knows exactly what it’s doing.
The government reasons thus: A solar powered nation would be less polluted. A less polluted nation would be have a healthier citizenry. Healthier citizens would require less health care. One of the fastest growing sectors of the economy would therefore begin to contract. This would deepen the Bush recession and cause economic pain from Wall to Main street.
Then there’s our dependence on oil imported from those who hate us for our freedom. Going solar would reduce our funding of Middle Eastern terrorists and Venezuelan anti-Americans and others in the axis of oil who wish us ill. That would obviate the need for the giant military-espionage complex that sprang up after 9/11. Hundreds of billions of dollars in contracting and thousands of jobs would be lost, thereby crippling another of the economy’s few growth areas.
Finally there’s an overwhelming political imperative. With the Republicans running an old, dull, bad-tempered, ignorant, unlikable codger for president against the most charismatic Democrat since JFK, the administration cannot do anything to further imperil the McCain candidacy. If by the U.S. going solar the terrorists lose our financing and are no longer a deadly threat, the sole purpose, the very raison d’ętre of the McCain campaign simply disappears. Obama wins in a walk and fine public servants like David Addington (if you didn’t catch his congressional testimony go to Youtube as fast as you can) would have to leave government.
So let’s be grateful to the B.L.M. In the true spirit of the Bush administration, it only has our best interests at heart.

A NOTE TO READERS ***Update***
Another three week plus hiatus, from April 30th until May 23rd, again due to Yahoo Geocities dismal service.
There was nothing new at The Nossiter Net between March 3rd and April 26th, 2007, nearly eight weeks. The reason: tech sabotage. Yahoo Geocities, the host for this site, denied access for the entire period. At one point, they even managed to lose all the files. In many discussions with Yahoo staff, no clear explanation was forthcoming. No one seemed able to fix the problem. Ruling out the possibility of Dubbya’s revenge, I finally wrote to Mr. Terry Semel, Chairman and CEO of Yahoo! Inc and described the ordeal the page had undergone since the beginning of March. A week later, a helpful Yahooo engineer named Jason called. He had my letter before him. Though he couldn’t do the repairs on on the spot, he promised a fix by the next day. That was April 26th, nearly two months after shutting me down in the first place.
The Nossiter Net apologizes, which is more than I can say for Yahoo Geocities.
